1. What is the CBU?

The Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University (CBU) is a consortium of ten universities, four from Finland and six from Russia. Currently, the CBU offers students a number of international, high-quality Master's Degree Programmes in five important fields of study-:

  • Business and Administration (Business and Administration)
  • ICT (Information and Communications Technology)
  • Forestry sector (Forestry and Environmental Engineering)
  • International Relations (International Relations)
  • Public Health (Public Health)

The language of instruction is English due to the international nature of the teaching. the duration of studies is 2 years (120 credits). At the CBU, a credit-modular system, compatible with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is used to evaluate the acquired knowledge of the students.

2. I want to study at the CBU. What do I have to do?

First of all, download and fill out one of the application forms, make a copy of your diploma and its annexes, make transcripts - academic information on all subjects completed at your university, make a CV. Write a cover letter in which to answer the question: why do I want to study at the CBU, collect 1-2 letters of recommendation (not obligatory). All documents must be translated into English and notarised (details available from the Coordinator of the programme, which you have chosen).

3. What kind of an English language certificate do I have to submit?

You can submit a TOEFL certificate or an IELTS certificate. English language proficiency, minimum TOEFL paper-based 550/ computer-based 213/ internet-based 79-80, or IELTS 6,0.

4. What do I have to do to get a visa?

Information concerning student visas, means of subsistence for the duration of study, the duration of a stay permit, health insurance, and much more can be found at the following sites:

5. How much do I have to pay for my studies?

Currently, studying at the CBU is free of charge at the Finnish partner universities. At Russian universities, a tuition fee of 1000 - 10 000$ is charged from degree students (home university). Exchange students (mobility period in the CBU) are not charged tuition fees by the host university.

6. What is the right way to write my own CV?

Note: Your CV should be brief. 1 page is enough.

  • Your name, address, telephone number (including area code), e-mail.
  • Goal (not required, but recommended): a brief description of the study programme you are interested in and why (no more than 6 lines, preferably 3-4) 
  • Work experience (if any) in reverse chronological order (first shown last place of work). Specify the start and end dates of work, organisation name, job title, main tasks. 
  • Education (in addition to the dates of start / end of study and place of study, you can emphasise the subjects studied).
  • Various additional information: references, hobbies, etc.

7. Where can I get additional information concerning the CBU study programmes and curriculum?

You can send an e-mail or simply call the Coordinator of each programme to obtain additional information concerning the study shedule and the curriculum. The Coordinator will be more than happy to answer your questions.

8. Do you offer student housing and how much does it cost?

Each CBU university has student services that guide with applying for accommodation e.g. in a student dormitory. 

9. Do you offer any financial aid programme?

The CBU does not provide any scholarships and has no formal programme of financial aid, but financial assistance is not excluded from the CBU scope and might be reconsidered in the future.

Important: partner companies may provide rewards for students who complete work placement at their premises.

10. Who do I need to contact if any additional consultation is needed?

You can send an e-mail or simply call the Coordinator of your study programme in case you need additional consultation. The Coordinator will be more than happy to provide you with the information you need. 

11. Is it possible to study and work at the same time?

In Finland, a foreign student has the right to work for a moderate amount of salary.
